Madawaska Valley Visitor’s Centre

The Township of Madawaska Valley operates a seasonal Visitor Information Centre, housed in the original Barry's Bay Railway Station. Township staff can help you find everything Madawaska Valley has to offer - from things to do, where to eat, or the best hidden gems to explore.

With a local history museum, beautiful grounds and picnic area, and numerous special events hosted annually, the Station is a great pitstop on your next drive through Barry's Bay.

Visitor Information Centre

The Madawaska Valley Visitor Information Centre is open seven days a week, 9am-5pm, from July long weekend to September long weekend. We are open weekends in June and September.

Township staff can help you learn more about our local area, past and present, and amenities include free public wifi, fully accessible public washrooms, and an outdoor picnic stop.

Local Museum & Stationkeepers MV

The Station is the homebase of the Stationkeepers MV, a group of volunteers dedicated to stimulating community interest, participation, and involvement in local heritage and cultural activities. Visit their free museum at the Station, and learn more about them at their website.

Station History & Preservation

The Barry's Bay Railway Station opened in October 1894, part of the new Ottawa, Arnprior and Parry Sound Railroad bringing passengers and lumber through Algonquin Provincial Park. Passenger service ended in 1960, and community members advocated to keep it standing while stations in surrounding communities were torn down.

Today, the Station remains in its original location, adjacent to Water Tower Park, home of Ontario's last remaining wooden water tower. The CN rail line, which once took trains through Madawaska Valley, is now a multipurpose recreational trail.

As the owners of the Railway Station, the Township has embraced its role in the maintenance and promotion of our collection history and made significant investments in the rehabilitation, longevity, and accessibility of the facility over the past decade.
