Shoreline Road Allowances

Waterfront properties within the municipality may have a 20 metre (66 feet) wide strip of land that separates their property from the water.
Referred to as “Shore Road Allowances”, these strips were put in place in the nineteenth century to allow for logging and the transportation of goods. These Shore Road Allowances have since been transferred from the Crown to the Township. If you or a previous landowner have not purchased the shore road allowance, it still remains the property of the Township.
Purchasing a Shoreline Road Allowance
From time to time, the Municipality will consider requests to permanently close road allowances, often for purposes of conveying the parcel(s) to abutting landowners.
There are procedures in place for those wishing to apply to purchase their shoreline road allowance. Applicants are encouraged to consult with the Planning Office prior to submitting an application, as well as review and become familiar with the Procedures for the Closure and/or Sale of Road Allowances.
Fees apply to have an application considered by the Municipality, and costs per linear foot of the road allowances are established annually. Visit our Fees & Charges page for current fees.
