Inspections

The Ontario Building Code requires builders to give notice to the Chief Building Official when your building is ready for mandatory inspections at each critical stage of construction. 

When Inspections are Required

Depending on the type of project, multiple inspections may need to take place at various stages of construction. Generally, inspections are required for the following:

New Home, Addition, or Commercial Buildings
  • Readiness to construct footings
  • Footings prior to the placement of concrete
  • Foundation complete, including damp-proofing, weeping tile and granular (before backfill)
  • Framing complete, roof/windows/doors installed
  • Rough-in plumbing 
  • Insulation and vapor barrier complete
  • Prior to occupancy/move in to receive Occupancy Permit
  • Final inspection to close out file
Renovation to existing structure (residential or commercial)
  • Prior to proceeding from any work outlined in stages above
  • Final Inspection to close out file
Garage or Accessory Building
  • Footings prior to the placement of concrete
  • Foundation and/or slab
  • Framing complete, including roof
  • Final inspection to close out file
Fuel Burning Appliance
  • Refer to TSSA Standards on each individual appliance
  • Inspection of chimneys are required prior to enclosure
  • Solid fuel burning appliances requires WETT certified license number and inspection to use
  • Final inspection to close out file
Pool, Deck, Porch, or Gazebo
  • Footings prior to the placement of concrete
  • Foundation and/or slab
  • Framing complete, including roof it applicable
  • Final inspection to close out file

Refer to the bottom portion of your building permit for inspection information specific to your project and permit.

Requesting an Inspection

Inspections are conducted Monday to Friday, excluding statutory holidays. It is your responsibility to contact the Building Department to make an appointment for inspection, and a minimum of 48 hours notice is required.
